Welcome to Confessions of a Teacher's Life!

Life as a teacher; where to begin is the question?

My life as a teacher began at Chamlian Armenian School; where I was a computer lab teacher for students in grades 1-5. I was working here while I was trying to finish my credentials and my masters in Education! By the way I was accomplishing this goal while I was married to my husband Robert, with my 2 year old son George, and pregnant with my daughter Sophia. (Boy was this a challenge in my life) With all of these obstacles, I managed to finish both in 15 months time.

After I left for Maternity Leave in March of 2008 for 2 months; I returned
to my job, where I was told I was being laid of because of the drop of enrollment. Wow that was the hardest news to hear! This was the time when the economy was starting to go down south and so was I. I had two kids now and neither my husband nor I had jobs to support our family.

I spent the whole summer of 2008 looking for a job and was having no luck! Two weeks before school started I actually got two job offers. One was to work at a Armenian Private School or at a public school called North Valley Charter Academy....Well guess which one I picked!
Yup, it was NOVA!!!

The Year from Hell...

My first year at Nova was quite interesting and stressful! As I like to put it I got the class from hell! You must understand that I have been in education for 10 years and I had never seen, heard, or experienced a class like this! I don't even know where to begin; I was teaching 6th grade and had 30 students total; NOVA is a small charter school and their is only one sixth grade class, this school is known for being a small and safe school. Yet my class was very unique and didn't even belong in this school! Some of the things that I heard and saw my 6th graders do shocked and scared me for life! My first month or two everything was peachy; but boy did they have a surprise for me! Usually in a classroom you might have a couple of students that are challenging or hard to handle, but for me it was half of my class! It didn't take much time before the whole school knew about what my students were capable of and how bad of a group they were. It started off with the students being mean and bulling one another; constant name calling and putting each other down! The vocabulary that they used was horrifying and I don't even what to repeat it! I think that I am a pretty good teacher and I am very strict in the classroom, but no matter what I tried, it was very difficult to get through to these kids. Most of them even though only 11 or 12 years old were interested in the opposite sex already and did not seem to have much control over themselves. Some of my boys in class would make sexual gestures towards the girls; it was horrible to know that they knew these gestures ( they would hump the chair and put their tongue between their fingers). I caught some of the girls sucking their fingers pretending it was a penis. The reality that young kids are doing these things and know what these things are; literally kills me! That was just the beginning I also took notes away that had some very disturbing images! (I will post these for you to see)
